George D. Durrant

George Durrant is known to many of the old-timers because of his writings, his talks (live and on tape), his teaching at BYU and other places, his service as President at the Provo Missionary Center, his two sons who played basketball at BYU, and his work as a sealer in the Mt.Timpanogos Temple.

But very few know him as an artist. He studied art as an undergraduate at BYU. The next 40 years he spent all his time at work, and as a father of eight and a husband to his beloved Marilyn. No time for art.

Then his children grew up and he retired from work, and art once a gain took center stage. For the past 20 years he has put his heart into water color painting. He does not do “oils” or any other kind of art because he says, “I only have a few years to go; and so I want to get good at water colors, and I have no time for any other medium.”

He is improving all the time and when asked how to you paint a good water color painting he responds, as he heard another respond, “To paint a really good water color painting, you have to paint 999 poor ones, and then maybe you will do a good one.”

He painted the painting, “Houses of the Lord” three years ago and sent prints out as Christmas Cards. People liked it and so he wanted to make it available to those who might be interested.
