Art For LDS Missionaries
In the Mormon church, going on a mission is almost a right of passage or a coming of age experience for young men and women. Missionaries are sent all over the world to share the gospel. Young men are called Elders, and young women are called Sisters. Elders serve for 2 years while sisters serve for a period of 18 months. Many missionaries find themselves in a strange foreign land with strange food, culture, and a new language to learn. They seek for the familiar amidst their new surroundings; they might look for things that remind them of home or their purpose as missionaries. Book of Mormon Art - LDS Artwork The Book of Mormon is a sacred record to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The book is a record of the ancient people in the American continent. It can be difficult to paint scenes from the book because we really don't know what the styles of clothing were actually like. Brigham Young University - BYU Aquarium I did some research online and found a vague references to an aquarium on BYU campus. I found out that there was an aquarium in the John A. Widtsoe building and that it was open to the public. We were determined in our quest to find it. Children's LDS Art in Roller Boxes - Sharing Time Ideas Though simple, this will captivate younger children and possibly older ones. You might consider letting your class or primary create their own pictures based on the lessons and then tape them together and show the artwork to the rest of the class. Children's Religious Books - Value Books, Standin' Tall, The Safety Kids and The Power Tales Standin' tall was a series of twelve books, each titled a specific value such as work, cleanliness, gratitude, obedience, etc. Each tape told a dramatized story with catchy songs, and each book contained attractive illustrations to color, the words to the story, and other activities. Just the other day, I sang to my son some of the songs from the "Cleanliness" book while giving him his bath. Choosing Appropriate Art For LDS Missionaries Consider the idea of missionary pictures or other LDS artwork to hang on their wall. This is something that they are sure to enjoy. The concern is what is appropriate art for a missionary? The best guideline when choosing appropriate art for missionaries is, will it detract or help inspire them? Does it remind them of home too much? Christian Inspirational Art - Using Paintings and Other Artwork to Show Our Faith Can Christian art be inspirational art? A wise man once asked me if my home was to be investigated could I be convicted of being a Christian? Obviously, I hope the answer is a resounding yes. However, what did he really mean by this question? Cultural Hall LDS Art - Artwork For Multi-Purpose Rooms A common name for a room in the LDS church is a cultural hall. Depending on who you are or what location you come from this could mean different things. A cultural hall could be the basketball gym that is in most LDS churches or it could also be a large room for gatherings or meetings. Sometimes these rooms are called multi-purpose rooms. Felt Boards a Simple LDS Art and Sharing Time Idea In the Mormon church, Sunday school for children is called Primary. One part of Primary is called sharing time. Felt boards are a simple way to tell a story and have been used by primaries in sharing time for years; however, they have slipped in popularity in recent years. Finding LDS Art at Your Ward Library Meeting House When people think of LDS meetinghouse libraries, they tend to think of pictures of the Savior, pictures of past and current prophets, pictures of temples, and paintings or photos of church members past and present. But the library is a veritable treasure trove of pictures of all sorts, old and new. These pictures and other library resources are not only for the purpose of teaching Sunday school, but also can be checked out for home use as well. Family home evenings can be greatly enriched by utilizing these resources. A Forgotten LDS Art - Film Strips Filmstrips were used to tell the Mormon message; they told Book of Mormon Stories, Church History Stories, and also taught lessons to youth, teachers and leaders. This technology was popular among members of the Mormon faith, and many public schools used this technology as well. Fun Family Home Evening (FHE) Ideas - LDS Art and Mormon Artwork Latter-day saints practice something called family home evening. Once a week, usually Monday evenings, families gather to learn the gospel, play games, and enjoy one another's company. Modern prophets have said this practice will help families stay strong. LDS Art - A Brief History The LDS people love great art work and use LDS art to bring the spirit into their homes and to remember their faith daily. Mormon chapels all over the world have walls aligned with LDS artwork. LDS Art - Where One Might Be Able See Many Original Paintings What better place to preserve the art than in the temples? Each temple is very secure and heavily guarded and well kept. The only people who are allowed to enter into the temples of LDS church are members who meet certain requirements. Helping Children Feel Grown Up - Sharing Time Ideas I decided to grab their attention by asking the boys, "how many of you like to learn new things?" They all raised their hands, and I promised them that if they paid attention that they would learn something new. They listened intently to learn something new and each boy did learn something new. Surprisingly, each boy also paid attention the entire time. I then asked them what they learned at the end of the lesson, reinforcing this idea. LDS Art Museum - Mormon Artwork The artwork displayed varies in form from paintings and sculptures to children's drawings and quilts. Every year they hold an international art competition with a theme. People from all over the world submit their creations and the winners have their art displayed at the museum and on the museum website. LDS Art and Media Many people think that LDS cinema started with the film "God's Army"; however the LDS church has been producing films since the 1940s. These films might never have been released in conventional theaters, but film has been an important part of LDS culture for many years. LDS Art of Christ - Mormon Artwork, Christian Paintings and Latter-Day Saint Artists Artists such as Greg Olsen and Liz Lemon Swindle have made their imprint by creating a new era of LDS art that can be found in many homes of those in the LDS faith. Their paintings show a great deal of emotion, have beautiful detail, and appeal to a wide audience. Doc Christensen has also created a new line of Christian Paintings by bringing Christ into modern settings through reflections in the mirror or silhouettes in the clouds. LDS Biblical Art - A Mormon Perspective Much of the LDS art available portrays images that pertain to just members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, however, Mormons have much in common with the rest of the Christian world as they also believe in the Bible. Mormon artists have portrayed many scenes that are found in the Bible, such as Moses parting the Red Sea, Abraham sacrificing Isaac on the altar, and Daniel when he was thrown in the lions den, just to name a few. LDS Artwork - Popular Mormon Paintings and Joseph Smith Art The most famous painting of the Prophet Joseph Smith in the Mormon church is the painting entitled "The Prophet Joseph Smith" that was painted by by Alvin Gittins. This painting is in the front of most of the copies of the Book of Mormon published in the last 30 years. When I visited a chapel of the Community of Christ they even had this particular painting of Joseph Smith displayed. LDS Church Art - In Your Ward Meeting House The main place in an LDS ward meeting house to find art is in the hallways and walkways. The ward bishopric and stake presidency usually chooses this art. They will decide what is appropriate for your area based on church policy. You will find paintings of the Savior, Joseph Smith, the current prophets and apostles. Some simple pictures of nature might also be used. Usually the art is framed, matted and under glass or plastic covering. Often you might also see canvas prints. LDS Church Magazines Art - Mormon Artwork Magazines have been an important part of the Mormon church from the early days as a way of spreading news of the church, sharing spiritual experiences and to providing gospel insights. LDS art has been used to help bring visual aids to make the articles more interesting. In every issue of "The Ensign", they have a spot on the back featuring art from well known LDS artists. "The New Era" has LDS art used to inspire youth to make right choices. LDS Church Meetinghouses - Mormon Chapels and Architecture My family and I were invited to clean our LDS meetinghouse the morning of general conference. When we arrived, a member of the bishopric asked me to follow him. The stake leaders asked him to add the wiring for a new internet connection, and he had been working on installing it that morning. LDS Conference Center - Mormon Meetinghouse and Art Museum The conference center is one of the largest non-sports auditoriums in the world. There are several levels. While the conference center is for the purpose of hosting meetings and events, it also serves as an art museum. On the walls there are many pieces of original artwork, including a piece a piece that belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte that is almost bigger than our house. LDS Family Art - Remembering the Eternal Members of the Mormon church place much emphasis on the family. You might remember many of the advertisements on television and radio, which teach a lesson about the importance of family and end with the phrase "Family, isn't it about time". LDS Fine Art and Artists Many LDS fine artist are commissioned by the church to paint specific paintings to be used by the church for things like Sunday School. Not all LDS artists are fine artists, however. Some LDS artists paint to develop their talents, such as George D. Durrant. He took up water colors to work on something new after a successful career as a professor at Brigham Young University. He had graduated in art and was never able to use his talents until after he retired. LDS Gospel Art Book - A Family Home Evening Must Have and Mormon Artwork Recently the Mormon church has developed a new gospel art book, not necessarily to replace the old gospel art kit but to simplify things. The gospel art kit was hundreds of pictures and photos to represent different doctrines or ideas unique to the Mormon faith. LDS Gospel Art Kit - Mormon Artwork This art kit is a set of pictures specifically designed to illustrate a story, gospel principle, or to give a visual of a complex idea of the gospel. Many of the images are images for children, but can be used for adults. It begins with Adam and Eve and ends with pictures of modern prophets, including pictures from the Old and New Testament, Book of Mormon, church history, and contemporary gospel topics. The kit was a little bit more expensive previously but was well worth the cost as there were over a hundred visual aids. LDS Missionary Art and Experiences - Sharing Time Ideas If you have served a mission yourself it is an excellent time to share experiences that you had as a missionary to help the youth get excited to be a part of the missionary army. You can help them understand missionary service by using art as a visual and the story to back the picture. You might consider bringing in photos of your mission and teach them about sacred experiences you have had. LDS Missionary Plaques For Ward Meeting Houses A missionary plaque is a small block of wood with 2 pieces of thin engraved metal, one piece includes the mission name, and a small outline of the mission area where the missionary is serving such as a state or country. The other piece of metal has an engraving of the missionary's favorite scripture. Then a picture of the missionary in a mission suit is included. LDS Paintings - Mormon Art an Expression of Faith Latter-day Saint artists have so many themes to work with. They have the Bible which contains both the New and the Old Testament. They have scriptures from the Book of Moses and Abraham. They have scenes from the Book of Mormon. Historical themes from the early history of the Mormon faith, pioneers and modern prophets just to name a few. LDS Pictures and Art in Sunday School and Church Meetings - A Short History In more recent years the LDS church has produced LDS pictures and art that is more spiritual and scriptural. There are still pictures of people in non-religious situations but they have tried to add a spiritual element to them. Much of the artwork prior to this change can still be found in your ward library however, as church libraries are upgrading they are slowly getting rid of such artwork. LDS Pioneer Art Painters - Love of Their Ancestors This artwork can be seen all over the church; it helps members reconcile their past and look forward with faith to the future just as Wee Granny Murdoch looked forward to her family settling in the western part of this nation. Pioneer art is an expression of love for their ancestors. Remembering these heroes is a great way to gain spiritual strength even in these modern times. LDS Church Art - Sacrament Meeting Programs and Bulletins - 10 Things to Keep in Mind Most sacrament meetings in North America pass out a bulletin before the sacrament meeting begins. When choosing LDS church art to for a program or bulletin there are a few things that you must bear in mind: Is the art necessary? Not every sacrament meeting bulletin needs a graphic on the front. LDS Primary Art - Appropriate Use of Artwork in Sharing Time There is much debate as to what is appropriate to use in sharing time. The church emphasizes that the items used should generally be produced by the church. However let's not get lost in the policy and lose sight of the principle behind it. LDS Scripture Art All Christian denominations accept the Bible to be the Word of God. In the Mormon faith, Joseph Smith, the first prophet of the Latter-day Saint Church, taught that: LDS Temple Art - Mormon Artwork Temple art is very easy to find as the Church has countless pieces of art that can be purchased on the church's website or at any local distribution center. Many other private businesses also sell photographs and paintings depicting temples. Latter-Day Saints Art With Non-LDS Themes Art and paintings in Mormon's homes not only express members faith but also their love of country, family and nature. Mormons look for truth and beauty in everything. Missionary Training Center - MTC Mormon Art and LDS Artwork Artwork has always played an important part in the MTC as missionaries line their walls with pictures and other art to remind them of why they are there. Before there was an MTC their was a mission home and a language training center. Missionaries used to take ceiling tiles from above their bunks and would draw pictures, cartoon, write poetry and other types of drawing to express their feelings for being there. Mormonads - Teen LDS Art Most stores carry posters of the latest singers, movie stars, and other icons. Teenagers fill their rooms with people the media portrays as being beautiful and successful. Mormonads provide simple but profound reminders in poster format that help youth reach for the best within themselves rather than trying to live up to the latest fads and fashions. Having this LDS art inspires youth to live happy, moral lives. Ogden Temple to Be Redesigned - Mormon Church On February 17, 2010, the Mormon church announced that it was going to redesign the temple in down town Ogden, Utah. The temple was built in the 1970s, and the original design was created to reflect the way the children of Israel were led in the wilderness: to be a cloud for shadow by day and a pillar of fire by night. This temple has a sister temple located in Provo, Utah; they both have the same design and features. Patriotism in Mormon Art With recent renewed patriotism, members of the LDS faith are looking for things that remind them of the godly heritage that they feel towards this nation. Mormon art is just one way to express their convictions. Pioneer Art - An Expression of the LDS Faith There are even paintings showing angels helping push handcarts with these pioneers, which many pioneers said had happened to them. These types of pictures remind members of the Mormon faith that there is always someone watching over them too in their time of need. RLDS Artwork and Art - Community of Christ I was recently looking at artwork on a website in which I saw several paintings by RLDS artists, and it was quite interesting. There were several paintings that would have been appropriate for either denomination, such as a painting of Joseph Smith's Mansion home at Christmastime, a painting of the Nephites being blessed by the Savior, and other artwork about the early history of both churches. Religious Children's Books - Quiet Books Quiet books have a variety of textures, removable velcro parts, and other interactive features that can keep even the most wiggly toddlers interested. For parents trying to keep their children reverent during church, quiet books with religious themes are quite appealing. Children learn scripture stories or other gospel principles and are entertained at the same time. Religious Children's Books - Teaching Valuable Principles and Reading Experts say that parents should read to their children at least 20 minutes a day to help their reading and comprehension skills develop. But children do more than learn to read when they look at books and are read to. They learn about all aspects of life from the characters and scenarios in the books. Salt Lake Temple Art - LDS Artwork Specialty Mormon Paintings The Salt Lake Temple is the most photographed, most painted and the most recognized temple in the Church of the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There are many paintings of the Salt Lake Temple. Salt Lake Temple Art - Mormon and LDS Artwork This gray building built out of granite has a castle like look to it. The front has three towers pointing to heaven and likewise the back. These six towers represent the leadership of the church as there are six presiding officers: three for the spiritual welfare of the members and three for the physical well-being. There are also forty rooms found within the walls. Sharing Time Ideas - Top 10 I decided to consult my wife who is in the primary presidency to help me write down the top 10 sharing time ideas. I was a former primary teacher in our last ward. Sharing time can be a very frightening experience it is only 10 - 15 minutes speaking and doing activities with a small or medium sized group of children however, filling the time with something they might enjoy can be challenging. The Difference Between LDS Art and Other Christian Artwork LDS artwork stands for Latter-Day Saint art, this means art that was created by or specifically for an LDS audience. Despite the fact that some people believe that members of the Mormon church are not Christians, the truth is that they are. You can tell just by the official name of the church. The Provo Tabernacle Fire - A Great Loss of LDS Art and Architecture After I got married, my wife and I would attend our Stake Conferences in Provo at the historic Provo Tabernacle. What a fantastic piece of Mormon Artwork and Architecture. Each time I entered in I remember the reverent feeling that encompassed me in that sacred building. Although this building was not a temple, it was still a house of the Lord. I looked forward with anticipation to those cool fall and spring mornings, when we were able to attend with the other saints and sing songs and praises to God. I even remember the year that L. Tom Perry, a member of the twelve apostles, spoke to us. Top 10 LDS Paintings LDS art is a very important part of LDS culture. Below are some of the top paintings that most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints would be familiar with. Top 10 Movies and LDS Films That Most Mormons Would Be Familiar With I was a student of Digital Media in college, which included the study of film. As I studied film and being a Mormon I realized that members of the Mormon faith love movies but there are certain films that Mormons are more familiar with than other groups. In my list I have excluded certain movies such as Single Ward, RM or other Mollywood (cheesy Mormon films). Here is the list that I came up with: Top 10 Reasons For Placing LDS Art in Your Home 1. Creates an atmosphere of reverence - Art in the form of pictures and other objects is designed to create various impressions and moods. Restaurants, bars, bowling alleys along with churches, schools, and museums all display art according to the ambience they wish to create. Using LDS Art As a Soothing Influence in Stressful Situations Art is powerful. It can call to mind thoughts and feelings instantly upon being viewed. A negative thought process needs but a small interruption in order to be redirected to something more positive. Using LDS Art in Primary-Sharing Time Ideas Showing a picture allows younger children to get involved by allowing them to point out objects in the picture. Older children are harder to please. Sometimes playing matching games or using pictures to help the children learn songs can be quite effective. Taking copies of certain art and then cutting them into puzzle pieces and having the children take turns putting puzzles together works well. You might want to consider laminating them and then donating the puzzle to your primary for future use. Using LDS Art to Create an Atmosphere of Reverence in Your Home Now that I have a family of my own, I realized we do have religious services in our home, though maybe not organized meetings. We have family scripture study, family home evening, and family prayers. I feel very comfortable seeking the Lord and His Spirit in a room where the walls are adorned with LDS art of Christ, temples, and the Family Proclamation. Using LDS Art to Have Faith Strengthening Discussions With Your Children Very young children may not be able to comprehend the full extent of God's plan for us, and what happens after death, but their little spirits are still very full of hope and faith. We as parents need to nurture and teach them. Using LDS Art to Inspire Youth to Serve Missions The best time to prepare to serve a mission is not six months before a young man turns 19 or young woman turns 21. The best time to prepare for a mission is when a child is young and full of faith. LDS missionary art can help inspire young spirits to join the Lord's army and spread the gospel throughout the world. Using LDS Art to Reinforce Sound Moral Principles You have probably heard the saying, "Sew a thought, reap an action. Sew an action, reap a habit. Sew a habit, reap a character. Sew a character and you'll reap your destiny," by Anthony Robbins. You may have experienced this played out in your own life, and seen it for good and bad in others' lives. Our thoughts are affected by what we see. Using LDS and Other Religious Children's Books to Teach Gospel Principles in the Home My wife and I often go to Deseret Industries, which is a thrift store run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This thrift store accepts donations of all kinds and sells them. All profits go towards humanitarian projects. |
